Cosplay enthusiasts sought for RSC apprenticeships
RSC Launches New Apprenticeship Programme
The Royal Shakespeare Company is actively seeking cosplay enthusiasts and people who love clothes or dressing up for two new apprenticeships in its Stratford-upon-Avon costume workshop. The prestigious theatre company wants fresh talent to join its world-renowned costume department. Applications are open for one role in costume-making and another focused on creating accessories and props.
Alistair McArthur, head of costume at the RSC, highlighted the need to find the next generation of milliners and costume prop-makers. He noted that there are currently few clear career paths for people interested in making accessories or props for the stage.
Welcoming Cosplay Skills
Mr McArthur specifically welcomed applications from people passionate about creating cosplay costumes of favourite characters from films, computer games and comics. He described cosplay as really exciting because participants must think on their own two feet and work with different materials. The RSC values the imagination, passion, flexibility and initiative that cosplayers often demonstrate.
The apprenticeships offer hands-on experience in a professional theatre environment while working toward a Level 3 garment maker qualification.
Workshop Opportunities
The RSC’s costume workshop is the largest in-house costume-making department of any British theatre. Apprentices will have access to specialist equipment and a wealth of knowledge from experienced staff. Claire Spooner, head of millinery and jewellery, expressed excitement about sharing skills with new apprentices and providing practical training on items such as hat blocks.
The programme is open to applicants over the age of 18 with no upper age limit and no requirement for a degree.
Creative Challenges in Theatre Costume
The roles involve a wide variety of creative problem-solving. Productions often require unusual items such as crowns that disintegrate on stage or dog tails that wag realistically. These challenges demand high levels of technical skill and imagination from the costume team.
The apprenticeships provide a structured route into professional theatre costume work for those with a passion for making and dressing up.
