Cosplay and Covid: Video gamers defy the virus
ChinaJoy Proceeds Despite Pandemic
Asia’s largest video game event, ChinaJoy, went ahead in Shanghai despite the coronavirus pandemic. Around 150,000 gaming fans attended the four-day event in 2020. This was significantly fewer than the 380,000 visitors the previous year, but the show demonstrated resilience in the gaming industry during global restrictions.
Organisers implemented strict safety measures including face masks, temperature checks, facial recognition scans and digital health code verification for entry. The event combined physical attendance with extensive online streaming to reach a wider audience.
Hybrid Event Format
ChinaJoy adapted by offering a mix of on-site activities and online launches. Gaming company Cocos developed virtual pavilions where fans could explore exhibits, watch live streams and participate in events from home. This hybrid approach allowed broader participation while complying with social distancing requirements.
Many industry professionals believe this blended model could become the new standard for large gaming conferences in the future.
Cosplay and Fan Engagement
Cosplayers brought colour and energy to the event with elaborate costumes. Fans dressed up as characters from popular games and franchises despite the challenging circumstances. The presence of cosplay helped maintain the vibrant atmosphere that ChinaJoy is known for, even with reduced physical attendance.
One female gamer attending for the third time said having nothing to do at home drove her to attend and have fun at the show.
Industry Resilience During Crisis
The coronavirus pandemic caused many major technology and gaming events to be cancelled. ChinaJoy stood out as one of the few large-scale shows that proceeded. Organisers stated the event would help the digital entertainment industry recover and restore confidence after months of disruption.
The gaming sector experienced a surge in activity during lockdowns as people turned to games for entertainment while staying at home.
