Comic Con bans cosplay champion's 'blackface' entry
Controversy at EuroCosplay Finals
A French cosplay champion has been barred from competing at the EuroCosplay finals at MCM Comic Con in London after her costume was accused of being blackface. Alice Livanart won the France Cosplay Cup in September 2019 with her portrayal of the League of Legends character Pyke. The character has dark skin and the costume included dark makeup that sparked widespread criticism on social media.
EuroCosplay organisers confirmed that the entry would not appear at the event. They stated they had heard concerns regarding the costume and apologised for any offence caused. The decision came after significant online debate about whether the cosplay crossed into racial insensitivity.
Details of the Costume
Alice Livanart posted a comparison photo on Instagram showing herself in everyday appearance next to the full Pyke cosplay. She described the transformation as highlighting the power of cosplay. The character Pyke is a fictional underwater assassin from the League of Legends universe with a dark complexion in official artwork.
She spent around €3,000 and many months creating the detailed costume including custom armour and effects. Despite the investment the entry was removed from the competition.
Response from the Cosplayer
Alice Livanart acknowledged the criticism but maintained there is a clear difference between blackface and cosplay. She emphasised that Pyke is a fictional character and that her portrayal came from love for the character rather than any intent to caricature. She expressed that she would continue to cosplay the character in the future.
She noted receiving both strong support and criticism online following the decision.
Division in the Cosplay Community
The ban has deeply divided opinions within the cosplay community. Some supporters argue that dark makeup for a fictional character should not be equated with historical blackface. Critics maintain that darkening skin tone for any character is insensitive regardless of context. The debate has highlighted ongoing discussions about representation and boundaries in cosplay.
EuroCosplay encouraged organisers to review their rules to prevent similar issues in future events.
