Jeremy Clarkson ‘sad’ after latest Top Gear development
Clarkson Reacts to Car Disposals
Jeremy Clarkson has expressed sadness over the BBC scrapping some of the customised cars from his era on Top Gear. The former presenter hosted the show from 2002 to 2015 alongside Richard Hammond and James May. During that time the trio modified numerous vehicles many of which later appeared in the World of Top Gear exhibition at the National Motor Museum.
The exhibition has now closed following the decision to put Top Gear on hiatus. A handful of the vehicles have been disposed of while others are being rehomed or restored. Clarkson described the destruction of some cars as a sad development particularly for petrolheads who view them as more than just ordinary objects.
Background to the Exhibition Closure
The World of Top Gear exhibition was shut down after the show was paused for the foreseeable future. This followed an incident involving presenter Freddie Flintoff during filming in 2022. The customised cars that had been on public display are now being moved with some deemed in too poor a condition to relocate.
Clarkson shared his thoughts on the matter stating that some people see cars simply as a ton-and-a-half of glass plastic metal and rubber. For petrolheads however especially those connected to Top Gear the vehicles hold much greater significance.
Specific Vehicles Affected
Among the cars reported as scrapped are Jeremy Clarkson’s Fiat Panda stretch limo and a Mini Cooper used in the first-ever car ski-jump attempt during a 2006 Winter Olympics special. James May’s caravan airship from 2010 was also reportedly disposed of. The BBC confirmed that a small number of vehicles in very poor condition and unroadworthy were disposed of.
The majority of the iconic vehicles have been rehomed with many expected to be available for public viewing at a new location to be announced soon.
Clarkson’s Perspective on the Cars
Jeremy Clarkson highlighted the emotional attachment many fans and presenters have to the modified vehicles. He noted that to petrolheads the Top Gear cars represent more than standard automotive components. The presenter who is now known for Clarkson’s Farm expressed clear disappointment at the loss of several of these unique creations.
The BBC has stated that some vehicles have been retained for restoration and future use by the Top Gear brand. This includes well-known models such as the indestructible Toyota Hilux the Nissank the P45 and Mr Nippy.
