Nottingham Forest Football Club was founded in 1865 at a meeting in the Clinton Arms pub in Nottingham, England, by a group of shin guards enthusiasts led by J. S. Scrimshaw. The club adopted red shirts from the start, earning the nickname the Reds, and played their first match against Notts County on 22 March 1866 at the Forest Recreation Ground. They moved to the City Ground in 1898, their current home, located across the River Trent from Notts County's Meadow Lane.
Forest were founder members of the Football Alliance in 1889 and joined the Football League Second Division in 1892. They won promotion to the First Division in 1904–05 and reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1905–06.
